What is Optomap®...
Developed in Scotland by Optos plc at a cost of more than £30 million, optomap® is an eye scanning laser ophthalmoscope which records and archives digital pictures of the interior of the eye for comparison year on year. The ultra-wide images provide an ‘eye map’ or optomap® of the retina up to 25 times greater than can be seen with traditional methods using a hand-held ophthalmoscope or even a fundus or retinal camera.

Why was it developed...
The idea was conceived by Douglas Anderson (an industrial designer and CEO of Optos plc) after his five-year-old son lost his sight from an undetected retinal detachment.  Anderson was determined to find a way to view the whole of the eye to prevent this type of tragedy happening again and, in addition, greatly reduce the trauma of investigative procedures.

Viewing the back and interior of the eye with a conventional hand-held ophthalmoscope is limited to very small areas approximately 2mm in diameter. By moving the ophthalmoscope beam around it is possible to build up a picture of the rear pole of the eye. Small pupils often make this difficult or the view can be obscured by cataracts.

How does it work...
Optomap® works as if it is a camera placed inside the eye. Using completely safe, low-powered laser beams a global picture of the interior of the eye is captured. This image is called an optomap®.

The procedure takes just a few minutes. The patient looks into the eyepiece, one eye at a time and presses a button once a simple image is seen. Without any eye drops to widen the pupil the ‘high-resolution’ images are taken and stored by the main computer. These are instantly relayed to the optometrist’s consulting room for inspection. In this way disorders will be recorded that hitherto were simply out of range of normal ophthalmoscopy and eye exams.
